When my son was still a baby, a combination of coincident factors, including the passing of my mother and the breaking up of my marriage, resulted in my experiencing a nervous breakdown.

One symptom that caused much suffering was a severe throat condition that made me scarcely able to eat or speak. I was beset by a tremendous nervous fear and could not sleep. Consequently I was unable to care for my child.

Much prayerful help was given by a Christian Science practitioner, and I studied as best I could. At the time this occurred we were having an unusual spell of rain, which lasted for a number of weeks. The practitioner asked me to go to the Reading Room of our branch church, and in spite of everything I unquestioningly drove myself there every day in the pouring rain. I spent one to two hours trying to sit quietly and study, endeavoring to entertain healing concepts of God and of my relationship to Him. Sometimes I was in such mental anguish at the Reading Room that I would have to call the practitioner to support me.
