About forty-six years ago my mother had a wonderful healing in Christian Science and tried to give this religion to her large family. At that time I was an agnostic. I couldn't believe in a God who caused or permitted all the evil and suffering I saw in the world around me. I was so steeped in the teachings of Darwin, Huxley, and Wells that I was quite unable to grasp the spiritual teachings of Christian Science.

Just after the Second World War my wife was suffering from anemia, and was in a constant state of depression and exhaustion. She turned to Christian Science for help and experienced almost overnight what seemed to me to be a miraculous healing.

She began attending services at a nearby Church of Christ, Scientist, and I went along with her just to see what it was all about. I was so impressed by the loving welcome we received from the ushers and the simple practical faith in God which was testified to at the Wednesday evening meetings that I realized that my life was empty and without a worthwhile purpose. I decided that I wanted to have what these people had and I did not have. I started to read the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I found that this book in every respect lived up to my highest ideals and presented to me an entirely new concept of God as universal divine Love, who causes no evil or disease.
