Learning to Control Pain

When Christian Science asserts that matter is really lifeless, inert, sensationless, it doesn't ignore the fact that certain forms of matter seem very much alive, very sensitive—especially to pain. The human body is a case in point.

But Science explains this apparent contradiction by showing that the material body is not the solid living entity that the senses seem to perceive. It is a mental phenomenon, the subjective state of limited mortal mind, of material thinking—a misstatement of the real spiritual man.

Obviously, then, any life or sensation that appears to be in matter is really in mortal mind. Pain is actually a mortally mental disturbance impinging on the mental image called body, and unless this fact is clearly seen it is difficult to effectively destroy pain by spiritual means.
