The comfort of being a member...

The comfort of being a member, and so a part, of the Christian Science movement twice carried me through the experience of widowhood. When my first husband passed on suddenly, I seemed to be in shock. However, the members of the church enfolded me in their love. For a whole month I did not eat one dinner alone. It was not until I returned to my native state that I really had to come to grips with grief and despair. One night in great longing I recalled the words "Father-Mother" as applied to Deity, and all at once I realized that I was inseparably related to our Father-Mother God. I felt completely encircled by this wonderful love. That was the turning point. I began to come out of what seemed to be a dark cave.

For one living alone, Sundays and holidays were the hardest. Being a part of the movement met my need. After I joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I was kept active teaching Sunday School and working on committees.

In 1959, my second husband passed on. Again I was upheld by the understanding that we always have our Father-Mother and our beloved Christian Science. Being a Reader was a great comfort, and I knew that Love would carry me through.
