How grateful I am for the generosity and selflessness of Mary Baker Eddy!...

How grateful I am for the generosity and selflessness of Mary Baker Eddy! I can't imagine what my life would be without the good that Christian Science has brought to it.

The realization of the healing power of gratitude was a turning point in an experience I had over five years ago. Several days after giving birth to a child I had a severe headache, and within a few hour I became dizzy and then lost consciousness for the remainder of the day. For several weeks the pain continued, and I experienced lapses of memory and lack of control over the muscles in my body. My sight was affected during this time. I was unable to see except for occasional moments, and then my vision was double. My speech was also affected.

One day when I was particularly depressed over the situation and unable to see or speak normally, I listened over the phone to the Christian Science practitioner who was helping me. She asked me to make a mental list of everything I had to be grateful for. I couldn't think of anything—not even that my four-week-old daughter was perfect and healthy. She said I could at least be grateful that I was still alive. Again, I could not be grateful, because I thought that if this was the way I would have to live my life, I did not want to live.
