From my childhood, my mother relied on Christian Science for the preservation of health in our family. One of the first healings I remember came while I was visiting my aunt, who was not a Christian Scientist. During this visit I was injured over my left eye, alarmingly close to the eye, and I lost consciousness. My mother had made sure that should any occasion arise where medication seemed to be needed a Christian Science practitioner would be called. The first thing I was aware of when I regained consciousness was that my aunt had called a practitioner.

In Sunday School I had been learning "the scientific statement of being" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I was mentally groping for the right words. The practitioner had assured my aunt that no medication would be necessary, because God was the Physician. The healing effect was instantaneous. I remember my aunt telling my mother that I was outside playing that very afternoon.

This healing was the beginning of my understanding of the ever-available capacity of divine Mind to heal whatever is in need of healing. I learned to love "the scientific statement of being," and I have used it continuously as a positive way to apply the healing truths of Christian Science. The statement concludes with the words (p. 468), "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual." Having learned that the Word of God, properly applied in Christian Science, would heal all my physical problems, I knew it would govern in every human endeavor. I have had many opportunities to demonstrate this in developing a good sense of security.
