In the words of one of the old hymns, "I love to tell the story."

It happened thirty-five years ago when the financial depression of the early thirties seemed to hang like a bleak fog over the world. My marriage had ended in divorce, and I was left to earn my own living and support my young daughter, as well as help support my mother. I had been out of the business world for some years and now had to look for work at a time when experienced employees were being laid off by the thousands. I answered countless advertisements and was registered at five employment agencies, but without success. This continued for over a year.

Several years earlier I had started smoking, deluded by the notion that it was the fashionable thing to do. However, I wanted to become a member of the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, I had been attending, and knew that to do so I must free myself from this habit. So after praying in Christian Science as we are taught to do, I did stop smoking, applied for membership in the church, and was admitted. After some months, however, I slid back and began smoking again. I was still without work, except for a temporary position now and then. My brother, who had been supporting the family, was laid off. The situation became critical.
