In my early teens a friend of my family asked me to attend two Christian Science lectures being given by the local Christian Science branch churches. We went together, and I was much impressed by the consistent emphasis laid on the healing power of God. However, I had just left school and had started work in a city office where I had made some exciting new friends, and the lovely experience of the lectures was seemingly forgotten.

Six years later I was confined to bed suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis, my weight reduced to seventy-five pounds. Much of my time in bed was spend in reading the Bible while I was being nursed by my devoted mother. After almost a year in bed I felt that she was overburdened by the strain of nursing me and taking care of the home and family, so I decided to go into a sanatorium.

Six months later I heard one of the patients mention Christian Science and the thought struck me, "Christian Science heals!" I wrote home that night asking if I might borrow a book about Christian Science from our family friend who had taken me to the lectures. He kindly gave my request to the literature distribution committee of a Church of Christ, Scientist, and a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy was given to me, a gift that brought me healing and an active happy life. I left the sanatorium within a few weeks.
