In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy quotes the Bible in this way (p. 444): "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.' " This has been proven true in my experience for many years.

Shortly after I had had the privilege of class instruction in Christian Science, I learned not to be afraid to take the first step. A loved niece telephoned that her little son had been vomiting for three days. She said he was very weak and thin. At first I was fearful, for I loved that little child very much and felt that an experienced, proven Christian Science practitioner should be asked to treat him. But the young mother replied firmly, "Aunt Ruby, you can do it." One cannot let down a faith like that, so I agreed to treat the child through prayer.

I had been told by a practitioner friend not to doubt the power of even a little understanding but to use it, and I recalled that Jesus had given thanks for the few loaves and fishes before feeding the multitude.
