Marriage: A Conversation of Love

Marriage means different things to different people, depending to a large extent upon their cultural and religious training. The history of marriage throughout the world has often been one of unhappiness, brutality, selfishness, and separation. What is the foundation of a satisfying marriage, and how can it be built?

Marriage is technically a contract. In a higher meaning, marriage can be thought of as an intimate and continuous conversation between two individuals who desire to express their love for each other and share a sense of companionship. The more spiritual that conversation becomes, the more rewarding and joyous it becomes. The marital closeness must be based on spiritualized thinking, each partner an individual growing Spiritward but always with a close sense of communion with the other.

Thorough study and understanding of the chapter entitled "Marriage" in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as well as adherence to its guidance, make a strong foundation upon which to build a happy and harmonious marriage. In this chapter Mrs. Eddy writes, "Tones of the human mind may be different, but they should be concordant in order to blend properly." Science and Health, p. 58;
