Early in my study of Christian Science I earnestly desired to join a branch church. I was reluctant to ask for church membership because it seemed that I was making no headway in an agonizing attempt to overcome the smoking habit. I mentioned it one day to a librarian in one of the Reading Rooms, and she suggested that I obtain help from a Christian Science practitioner. Up to this time I had thought of a practitioner only as assisting with illness. During my visit with the practitioner, I was impressed by the casual way she dismissed my smoking as a problem and talked joyfully of God and spiritual reality. The result was an instantaneous healing. As a matter of fact, it was almost three days before I realized that I had not smoked or even thought about smoking.

A painful condition of the feet was healed when I made an honest effort to overcome criticism in my thinking. I reasoned that the foundation of our religion is perfect God and perfect man, and that until I was really aware of this I was not on a firm basis.

Glasses, which had been worn for a number of years, were laid aside as I attempted to magnify the good in every experience that came to me.
