Redeeming the Past

Much suffering, collective and individual, comes from the influence of past mortal thoughts. The world's problems—racial conflict, violent youth protests, labor-management differences—have their roots in past mistakes, past evils. The Bible tells us that "God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Gal. 6:7;

Our world needs help. How can we pray to heal the collective or individual wounds inflicted in the past? Can we hope for thorough healing that leaves no scar? Have we reasonable expectation of a future free from the ominous shadow of fear and hatred?

God, understood in Christian Science as divine Mind, which includes all that truly is, knows only what He has made—the divine concept. The supreme, infinite Being could not know anything unlike Himself at any time. At the very moment—centuries ago or last week—when mortal sense presented an erroneous condition, God knew only the true idea of whatever was presented. God, Truth, demands that we too acknowledge the truth of His presence and activity in place of apparent wickedness, ignorance, or stupidity. In this way God demands that we accept His concept of all that is happening at any time and challenge the reality and effectiveness of every erroneous belief.
