In 1914, during a trying experience, I took up the study of Christian Science. I am deeply grateful to God for Christ Jesus and for Mrs. Eddy for the joy and many blessings this teaching has brought me.
In 1922, while with a bridge crew, my back was badly injured. I was entitled to State compensation, but I was denied it because I refused to have an operation. For a week I was bedfast, but with the help of a Christian Science practitioner I was healed in two weeks. Since I felt well, I reported for work. But because the doctor had said I would be disabled for life, without an operation, they would not believe I was healed.
I kept after the foreman, and he finally put me back to work. I served for twenty years, until my retirement at age sixty-five. That was in 1942. I then kept busy at odd jobs for the next sixteen years. I am still active, caring for two properties acquired since I came here.
