Do You Love Yourself?
Christ Jesus referred to a very valuable admonition of the Old Testament, an admonition basic to Christianity, when he told his followers, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Matt. 22:39; Most people remember the words "love thy neighbour" but seem to forget the vital words "as thyself." These words are important because if one learns to love and appreciate his true self as the child of God he finds that it is very simple and natural to love his neighbor.
The carnal, or mortal, mind is concerned with the material sense of man. It is very eager either to blow itself up in a way that Paul calls "puffed up," I Cor. 13:4; and that therefore makes itself appear obnoxious, or to deflate itself and disclaim ability or knowledge.
Both of these traits show mortal mind up as something one should not want to hold on to or live with. We learn in Christian Science that our job is to live the Life which is God and let our true selfhood in His likeness be expressed right where mortal mind seems to be. Then as we become more familiar with our true selfhood, we discover why we can love ourselves.
