Spiritual Perception Dispels Deception

In the pretelevision era a person usually became familiar with certain commentators or actors only through the sound of their voices over the radio. The author remembers a man who told of his disappointment over finally viewing a picture of a favorite news commentator and discovering that the person behind the robust voice didn't match the mental image of him that he had held over a long period of time.

How true it is that individuals frequently are deceived by contriving mental images of situations and things that do not coincide with fact! Sadly enough, many young people today learn through suffering that the use of drugs, which propaganda would deceive them into thinking can afford more zest and meaning to life, only leads to disillusionment.

So many of the discords arising in marriage and the home, in business, and even in the church can be attributed to a narrow and deceptive viewpoint rather than to a true and more spiritual, thus complete, appraisal of these facets of human life. The individual, for instance, who views marriage only from the physical and sensual aspect is in for disillusionment. Likewise, the individual who looks upon his job only from the standpoint of its moneymaking potential or its retirement advantages has missed its real meaning. One is far more likely to achieve true satisfaction if his pursuits in life are motivated by a sense of useful service, joy, and respect for the good in others.
