Signs of the Times

From an editorial
in the Illinois State Journal
Springfield, Illinois

The time has come for civil obedience in the United States of America.

It is time for the present generation of American adults to stop apologizing for the incomparably great legacy they have left future generations.

It is the time to emphasize that the legacy of opportunity has never been greater in any generation than it is today....

This is the generation of adults that has brought education, science and technology to new peaks of achievement. And it has done so by enlarging the freedom to inquire and challenge in true intellectual manner....

It also is time to stop condoning the destructive exhibitionism on the streets by people who put themselves above the law and the United States itself.

The time has come for more emphasis in extending the equal protection of the law to the law abiding.

It is past time to stop granting amnesty to the exhibitionists on campus or on the streets when they are brought to justice. There can be no amnesty for anarchy.

The time has come to insist on observance of the morality that has helped build one nation under God—a morality that separates us from the jungle and animal world. It is time that we insist the churches we support also support this morality and teach the word of God.

From a Letter to the Editor by Mrs. W. E. Berry
in the Buxton Advertiser and High Peak News
Buxton, Derbyshire, England

The child of today thinks more for himself and does not readily accept a thing because he is told to. It is no good telling [children] the teachings of Christ, if they fail to see these teachings put into action by those who profess to believe them....

Can anyone dispute the fact that the world would be a happier place if Christ's teachings had been put into practice, if all those who have called themselves Christians down the ages had lived by their principles? This is what we must get over to the children. Why the world is in the condition that it is today is not because Christianity has failed, not because it has been found wanting, but because people have only paid lip service to it.
