In Praise of Fair Play

Is there in a God-governed universe such a thing as inequality of opportunity? Does God parcel out His gifts in prodigious quantities to some, and then, on the other hand, deprive others completely? In other words, are some of God's children the "haves" and others the "have-nots"?

To these questions Christian Science, on the basis of spiritual evidence, would answer No! It teaches that injustice is unknown to God, divine Love, who governs His universe with tender impartiality. Mrs. Eddy writes: "Love is impartial and universal in its adaptation and bestowals, it is the open fount which cries, 'Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.'" Science and Health, p. 13;

However, from the standpoint of physical sense testimony social injustice seems rampant. Because of racial extraction, family background, economic conditions, many have a relatively easy road to adequate education and the economic and cultural advantages it brings. Others seem consigned by the same factors to a life of hopelessness. The selfish indifference and blind prejudice of large segments of society contribute to this misery and chain multitudes to lives of degradation and poverty.
