A Table Prepared

Very late one night a young woman sat alone in her living room. She was experiencing physical pain and other discomforts, as well as extreme mental torment. She had spent several hours studying the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. And she had called a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer.

She was well aware of the teachings of Christ Jesus regarding the necessity of loving all mankind: her friends, her neighbors, and her enemies. And the central theme of her prayers that long, difficult night was an earnest desire for an enlightened understanding that would enable her to love her enemies. This was especially necessary since within her family there was one who seemed very hateful and determined to rob her of her joy, her peace, and her dominion. It was hard not to be resentful and bitter when thinking of the unkind words spoken and the distressing things done.

However, she well knew that she had no choice in this matter. She knew she had to love. And she knew that because God is Love, she would be able to do this if she prayerfully considered the Love that is God. There was much in Science and Health and the other writings of Mrs. Eddy that was helpful to this young mother as she read and prayed about everything she found on the subject of loving one's enemies. She had turned repeatedly to the teachings of Jesus on this subject and found strength there. But yet the tears came, and the sense of anguish persisted.
