Tom Breaks the Unhappiness Barrier
[For children]
Tom's father is a commercial airline pilot. For many weeks Tom had been eagerly looking forward to riding along on one of his father's jet flights. He could hardly wait as the big day approached. He packed a small bag with a few of his favorite books for the all-day trip.
Tom awakened very early on the morning of the trip. But when he came down to breakfast, he could hear his dad and mother talking rather seriously. They did not greet him in their usual cheerful way. "What's wrong?" asked Tom.
"Nothing is wrong," answered Dad. "However, Tommy, the weather looks as though it may be closing in, and it is possible that you may not get to go today. We carry fewer people and more fuel on the flight when weather is involved. However, we'll see how things look when we get to the airport."
