The Consistency of Truth

From early Bible times Truth is one of the names for God, one of the terms definitive of His nature. The writer of Deuteronomy described God as Truth in these words: "Ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he." Deut. 32:3, 4;

The name Truth defines God's nature as basic reality, unchanging, unalterable, eternal fact. Because God is Truth and because Truth is perfect, consistency can readily be seen as a quality of Truth, God. The truth that bases any science, such as mathematics, is, of course, consistent. Results are consistent with the correct application of the basic truth of the science. Christian Science teaches that divine Truth, when correctly understood and lived, gives perfect, consistent results. Truth, God, is a rock, a firm foundation, upon which to build one's thinking and experience.

In the Glossary of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives part of the definition of "rock" as "spiritual foundation; Truth." Science and Health, p. 593; The real man, the image and likeness of God, is firmly established on the unshakable, perfect, rocklike foundation of spiritual Truth. The teachings of the great Biblical prophets, of Christ Jesus and his followers, and of Mrs. Eddy enable the present-day searcher for Truth, God, to discover not only God's nature as Truth but also to learn man's firm foundation in Truth and man's ability to demonstrate the consistency of his nature as Truth's offspring. As one is willing honestly and humbly to express in his thinking, speaking, and acting all that he knows and understands of God, he sees correspondingly demonstrated in the entire realm of his human experience the superb consistency of Truth, God.
