Conquering Egotism

One of the most disturbing factors in human relations is the element of egotism. It continuously leads to dissension wherever it appears. It is the claim of identity in matter and material sense and is opposed to the real Ego, which is God, infinite Spirit. Only as one conquers this false sense of ego in his own thought and life will he find genuine peace and progress.

Christian Science teaches that egotism stems from mortal mind, the suppositional opposite of the divine Mind. The false ego is the belief that matter has creative power, and it presents man and the universe as a material creation. Christ Jesus represented the creative power of divine Principle, or God. He demonstrated dominion over the belief that matter is intelligent and that it can form its own conditions. He showed the power of Spirit to govern human experience and to heal the human body. He annulled the beliefs of sin and disease, rebuked pride and sensuality, and brought peace to the hearts of his followers. He showed the way of release from the false mentality that claims intelligence in matter.

The Bible speaks of the carnal mind as "enmity against God," Rom. 8:7; and Jesus experienced the resistance this false ego presented. Throughout his healing ministry he opposed the belief of mind in matter, and he demonstrated the fact that Mind is Spirit, God. Mrs. Eddy says of Jesus: "Individuality and Life were real to him only as spiritual and good, not as material or evil. This incensed the rabbins against Jesus, because it was an indignity to their personality; and this personality they regarded as both good and evil, as is still claimed by the worldly-wise. To them evil was even more the ego than was the good." Unity of Good, p. 46; And she adds, "This evil ego they believed must extend throughout the universe, as being equally identical and self-conscious with God."
