Years ago, when our daughter was a little girl, she became ill with a high fever. At that time other members of the family were opposed to what they thought Christian Science was, so when everyone was asleep, I crept downstairs to call a practitioner. Our line was out of order, and leaving the house to find another phone was out of the question.
Although I was very fearful, I made an effort to study the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and to remember the truths of Christian Science I had been learning. However, my thinking seemed to become paralyzed with fear, and finally I sank down beside the sofa on my knees, praying humbly to know that God was present. After a time Paul's words came to me (Rom. 8:38, 39): "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Gradually the import of the message unfolded to my thought, and I realized that neither a mortal sense of life with a beginning and end, nor erroneous fearful suggestions, nor so-called material laws or institutions, nor illusions of time or distance, nor any other figment of mortal mind imagination could in reality separate us from God's love. As I thought about this, I became very grateful for the revelation; and my fear melted away, completely destroyed. I went to our daughter's room and found that she was resting peacefully; the fever had broken.
