I was born in London and worked eventually at a large store in Oxford Circus. I was often ailing and weak, and at one of the many visits I made to the doctor he told me I had lung trouble and was likely to become consumptive. This greatly depressed me, as some of my family had passed on with this complaint.
One day the head of our department told me to go home for a week and to come back when I looked better. It was a Wednesday, and that morning a friend passed through our showroom and asked me to come to the Christian Science testimony meeting with her that night. I knew a little of Christian Science, but I said to her: "I don't want Christian Science. I like to feel the cod liver oil going down me."
She replied, "Take the cod liver oil but come to church with me."
