Christian Science Church Center PROGRESS REPORT No. 24

Form and Foundation

Boston's brisk November air has been matched by the acceleration of activity at the Church Center building site. The basic form of the Center is taking tangible shape, evidencing the careful planning and hard work done over the past several years.

Excavation for the new Sunday School Building and the underground garage is complete, and considerable earth has been removed at the site of the Colonnade Building. Many of the foundation piles for the Sunday School Building and for the garage and reflecting pool over the garage are in place, ready to shoulder their heavy load.

A tidal area of the Charles River only a little over a hundred years ago, the Back Bay section of Boston where The Mother Church is located was filled and reclaimed to expand the city's available land. Now, at the site of the garage and reflecting pool, the fill has been excavated to the level of the original river bottom. A layer of fine gravel, a yard deep, was spread so that heavy trucks and pile-driving rigs could operate without sinking.
