"God said, Let there be light: and there was light" (Gen. 1:3)

"God said, Let there be light: and there was light" (Gen. 1:3). I am humbly grateful for Christian Science, which led me to the light of Truth.

In 1952, during a very unhappy and wretched period of my life, Christian Science was introduced to me. Almost overnight I was healed of jealousy and resentment caused by my having been left to rear three children on my own.

My deep desire for membership in The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, and the consecrated work of a Christian Science practitioner were the means of my complete healing of the smoking habit. I disliked this habit very much and yet could never completely free myself from it. In the past, before I knew of Christian Science, I had given up smoking for a week or two but had always gone back to it again. Finally one evening when I was particularly despondent, the practitioner pointed out to me that I was making too great a reality of the problem in my struggle to be free. She concluded with the statement, "The truth is that as a child of God you have nothing to get rid of." Being a new student, I did not at the time understand her implication that man's selfhood as the reflection of God includes nothing impure; but I was healed, and I have never smoked since that time. The desire completely left me.
