I am grateful for my childhood religious training, which prepared me to accept Christian Science at a time of great need. My parents were good Bible students, and my grandfather a minister. Therefore, when I began the study of Christian Science, my attention was immediately turned to the chapter on Prayer in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I found it all-absorbing and spiritually enlightening.

As a child and young woman I had not been strong, and after my marriage and the premature birth and loss of our first child, I was left in a weakened, nervous, and hemorrhagic condition that the physician said could develop into something more serious. For over a year I had been under the care of a physician and had grown gradually worse until I was scheduled to go back to the hospital for further diagnosis and, possibly, surgery. I was extremely thin and confined to bed even for meals and had the care of a nurse. Even more discouraging was the thought the physician had voiced that I probably would never have any children.

However, the case was never fully diagnosed, for at that point a friend presented Christian Science to us. With her help we telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who began to give me treatment at once. I have never been able to recall in detail those next few weeks after beginning the study of Science, for I became so immersed in the study of the textbook. Science and Health, that all else seemed of small importance. I remember that from the day the practitioner was called I was never again confined to bed. All evidence, including the frailty, which had prevailed to this point, disappeared; and the Christian Science treatment was discontinued in less than two weeks.
