For the protective power of Christian Science I am very grateful...
For the protective power of Christian Science I am very grateful. While I was asleep one night in my room at an Army post in Germany, a man climbed in through my window and tried to harm me.
As I struggled physically without success, I earnestly prayed to God for help. The answer, "Act, don't react," came sharp and clear. I ceased my physical struggle, and the intruder, when convinced I was going to remain calm, promised not to harm me and removed the rag which he had stuffed in my mouth.
As I prayed to know that all God's children move in complete harmony, the following passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy came to me (p. 340): "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself.' " I was able to see this individual clearly as God's perfect child in the brotherhood of man and to love him as such.
I told him he was God's perfect child and that I knew he wouldn't and couldn't harm me. I can honestly say I fostered no resentment at this point or at any time thereafter. I clearly and instantaneously saw this man as the child of God, and when I did, all fear left me. Then I was able to stand. Although the man still held my arms behind my head, I was able to pull away. I ran for the door and into the hall for help. As I reached the door, the man slipped out of the window.
A few hours later I was subjected to lengthy questioning. The principal of the school at which I teach expressed concern for my physical well-being, predicting I would suffer some severe aftereffects. However, through the work of a Christian Science practitioner, whom I called as soon as possible, I suffered no ill effects.
By knowing that God governs and is just, I felt no resentment or fear when the intruder was not found. I didn't abhor the experience but was very grateful for the demonstration of the practicality and universality of the teachings of Christian Science.
I should also like to express gratitude for the privilege of attending two conferences in Berchtesgaden, Germany, for Christian Scientists serving with the Armed Forces. The love, spontaneity, warmth, and joy expressed at these conferences have been a shining light during my stay in Germany. The truths gleaned from them have been an ever-present help in my spiritual growth. The conferences showed me the far-reaching, earnest, and unselfish work done by Christian Science Ministers, Chaplains, and all those connected with the Christian Science Activities for the Armed Services. I am most grateful.
