This testimony of gratitude for Christian Science covers a period of over forty years. In 1925 our whole family was stricken with a very severe form of influenza which was prevalent in the community at that time. In the case of the younger son it was followed by pneumonia. He was finally in a coma, and the doctors said: "We have done all we can. Now we shall just wait." He was receiving nursing care around the clock.

At this point some Christian Science friends who lived nearby loaned us Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and we began to study it together with the Bible, sitting up at night in the back part of our home. We also asked a practitioner for treatment, and we began to glimpse something of the truth that God is Spirit and that man is His spiritual image and likeness, not in matter. A verse in Romans stood out clearly to us and we seemed to grasp its meaning. It reads (8:18), "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us."

I shall never forget my first real visit with the practitioner at our neighbors' home. She talked to me about God's allness and explained that He fills all space. She said I must see our child's true selfhood as God's perfect idea and likeness, no matter what the material manifestation seemed to be. It was as if a great light had entered my consciousness. I was like a different person.
