Spiritual Multiplication

In the first chapter of Genesis, which records the revelation of the true, spiritual creation, God commands all living things to multiply. Not only man, but the grass, the herb, and the fruit tree are commanded to yield fruit after their kind. All living creatures are to bring forth abundantly. Every true concept, or idea, expresses the living, omniactive Mind, God—its source. Every spiritual concept multiplies.

Christian Science shows that matter is not mentioned in this great revelation of God's creation, for matter is temporal, destructible—the very opposite of Mind, Spirit, the one creator. And because matter does not enter into the real creation, multiplication must be understood in its metaphysical meaning as taking place in the realm of Spirit and through the reflecting of Spirit.

A simple illustration from the science of numbers hints how multiplication takes place through reflection. Consider the number 2, for instance; it is a unit and has no duplicate. There is only one mathematical idea 2. But in the thought of multitudes, 2 is understood and thus reflected. The number 2 does not belong exclusively to any individual but is included by reflection in the consciousness of each person who understands it. Understanding, then, is essential to multiplication.
