When I was a very young child, my parents were steeped in hygienic and medical theories. My mother even wiped doorknobs before I touched them so I wouldn't come in contact with germs. When I was six, however, a relative introduced us to Christian Science. My parents readily accepted this way of life. And from then on they relied completely on Truth for protection and healing, and I grew up in an atmosphere imbued with confidence in God's care.
Proof of God's care in our family has included the instantaneous healing of hives, a nervous condition, and the quick handling of so-called children's diseases. Other healings, some of which took longer, are those of blood poisoning, a skin disease, ivy poisoning, and a wound caused by a sewing machine needle passing through my mother's hand.
Although my growing-up years were harmonious and free from fear, I drifted from Christian Science during college. I did not resort to medication, but I read from the Bible and the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, only now and then when a problem presented itself. I also began to smoke. After I left college, the smoking habit grew until I smoked a minimum of two packages a day. I was seldom seen without a cigarette, whether I was baking cookies or working at my desk. I would even get up in the middle of the night to smoke. At this same time more than a dozen warts appeared on my right hand. They were all the more noticeable to me and everyone because I smoked with this hand. Using human will, I tried several times over a period of nine years to give up smoking, but failed.
