In the summer of 1914 my brother came to visit us, and I first heard of Christian Science. He told us of two healings he had had through this religion. One was of a badly sprained ankle. At another time a piece of steel had flown from a machine into his eye, and the injury was healed through Science. I was very much impressed when I heard of these wonderful healings; but since we lived far apart, I heard no more about Christian Science.
Several years later, after being ill and under a doctor's care for some time, my condition became worse. Medical treatment was resorted to in many forms, and finally I had an operation. This did not help my condition in the least. On the contrary, this painful abdominal ailment became worse.
In my girlhood I had become familiar with the Bible. I was impressed by the fact that Jesus healed without medicine. I now began to believe that his healings must have had a rule behind them, and if this rule could be learned and understood, spiritual healing would be possible. I prayed in my extremity to learn what this rule might be.
