Charlie's Armor

[Of special interest to children]

Charlie was very excited about his part in the spring program at school. He was to be a sailor and wear a sailor suit. One morning about a week before the program, he showed his mother a red spot on his side. Because his mother knew that this condition indicated something believed to be contagious, she decided to keep him out of school until it disappeared.

That morning Charlie listened while his mother read the Lesson-Sermon outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. One reference from the Bible especially interested him: "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Eph. 6:13–17;

Charlie had seen pictures of soldiers and knights in shining armor and was fascinated to hear every necessary part of a suit of armor mentioned in the Bible quotation. He and his mother reasoned that if he wore such armor, he would be completely protected. If he wore spiritual armor by expressing truth, righteousness, love, faith, and purity, and used the Word of God as his sword, no error in any form could touch him. And not just his body, but his whole life, his happiness and peace and joy, would be protected.
