At the age of four I contracted sleeping sickness

At the age of four I contracted sleeping sickness. Doctors predicted that should I recover, a short life-span as an invalid was certain. I drifted into a coma that lasted eight days and nights. The doctors ceased treating me and said the case was out of their hands. In desperation my parents, who were not Christian Scientists, prayed. The eighth day I awoke, much to the surprise of all, and steadily progressed to a recovery.

My childhood, thereafter, was normal, and at age nineteen I passed the rigid physical examination required to become a Naval Aviation Cadet. After graduation I was assigned to an aircraft carrier task force as a dive bomber pilot in the Pacific. During my World War II combat tour of thirty-five missions, I had many positive proofs of the presence of an absolute power that was superior to the weapons of the enemy, a power that protects and guides one to a safe course of evasion in the darkest moments of combat. I vowed that I would learn more about this power, which I believed had also brought about my childhood healing.

After marriage, my wife and I searched for a religion that fully satisfied our desire to learn more about God. My former religion and others we tried didn't meet our needs. We decided to attend a Christian Science church, and found Science to be the answer.
