RADIO PROGRAM No. 204 - Do You Have Reason to Be Envious?

QUESTIONER: It seems that one can't help at times feeling envious. For instance, suppose somebody does his best at something and feels proud of his accomplishments, but then someone else comes along who does so much better. Sometimes it's difficult not to be envious. Many people would say that life is competitive.

SPEAKER: Granted, there's much competition. But competition leads to envy only if we try to beat everybody else, or if we believe it's hopeless for us to improve or excel. There's no element of envy in the approach to competition that seeks simply to bring out the very best in ourselves. One who is aware of his God-given ability, his God-given potential, has no cause for rivalry or envy.

In the Bible parable in which the older son resents the good things that the father bestows on his repentant younger brother, Christ Jesus has the father say (Luke 15 :31), "Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine."
