Individuality and Spiritual Conformity
[Of special interest to young men and women]
Many young people today strive for individuality. But too often they do not reach their goal because they try to be original through material means. A youthful fad that may be different from adult practices and new to human experience is not unique if hundreds indulge in it without variation. It may attract either praise or condemnation, but it is not notable for its individuality.
Paul instructed the Corinthians, "Come out from among them, and be ye separate." II Cor. 6:17 By this he did not imply that anyone should endeavor to draw attention to himself as an extraordinary mortal but that the hearers of these words should release themselves from the conforming restrictions of materialism. Paul knew that only by spiritualizing thought can one express true individuality and originality.
To express individual, attractive qualities, one must first know where they originate. Christian Science teaches that their only source is God, Life, Truth, and Love. Anyone who has experienced the healing presence of divine Love knows this to be the only source of true affection. Whoever has demonstrated the efficacy of Truth in destroying error knows Truth to be infallible.
