A Healthy Self-examination

The human body is the subject of endless dissection and examination. A vast amount of time and energy is given to probing the various reactions of the body and the intricate structure of the physical organization. It would seem logical that at some point in this search the material scientist would come to the saturation point, that is, he would know all there is to know about the body. And yet the search seems to go on with no end in sight.

Christian Science approaches this subject in an altogether new light and guides research away from body to consciousness. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "Anatomy, when conceived of spiritually, is mental self-knowledge, and consists in the dissection of thoughts to discover their quality, quantity, and origin." Science and Health, p. 462; And in seeking the remedy for human ills she continues, "The anatomy of Christian Science teaches when and how to probe the self-inflicted wounds of selfishness, malice, envy, and hate."

It is of crucial importance to know that causation is mental and that in order to arrive at proper remedies and antidotes for suffering, the mental causes of the difficulties must be eliminated. Jesus was the greatest healer of all time, and his instructions implied that we should take no thought for the body. His basic teaching in the Sermon on the Mount is a clear and detailed dissection and purification of human consciousness. He continually referred to the thinking of the individual as the realm from whence his experience stems.
