Words can never begin to express my gratitude for God, for Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and for Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I was privileged to have Science as a child. However, after I married, I drifted away from it and attempted to find happiness through other channels, and during this process took up the habit of smoking and would at that time have an occasional cocktail. Later, drinking became an overwhelming problem which threatened to engulf me.

This erroneous condition had come upon me so subtly that I was unaware of the pit into which I had fallen. During this period I seldom went anywhere because I was in constant fear that the condition would be discovered. However, a neighbor came to visit one day, and her genuine love and compassion were so in evidence that I was naturally drawn to her.

Several days after this visit I had a great desire to go to see her, and while visiting, I saw a copy of the Journal on a table. When the words "Christian Science" came into my vision I suddenly realized that right there was the answer to all my problems and that the seemingly bottomless pit into which I had fallen was not bottomless. My downward trend had been arrested; the light of truth was leading me toward the upward way.
