WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST

[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on August 29. 1965.]

Thorns (Luke 8:7)

In Jesus' parable of the sower and his seed, as recorded by Luke, the reference to the thorns which choked the seedlings is peculiarly vivid. Farrar observes that "in rich soils and hot valleys like Gennesareth, the growth of weeds and thorns is as rapid and luxuriant as that of good seed. In summer and autumn there are parts of the plain which are impervious from the forest of gigantic thistles which covers them." In fact. The New English Bible prefers to read "thistles" rather than "thorns" at this point.

They, which...bring forth fruit with patience (Luke 8: 15)
