Window Displays: Our Silent Messengers

The far-reaching effects of an inspired, attractive Reading Room window display are beyond measure. Countless passersby are blessed as they pause to read from the open books presenting the Christ, Truth, which heals and regenerates. Often a helpful passage from the bible, from the writings of Mrs. Eddy, or from a current article in one of the Christian Science periodicals, applicable to personal, community, or world situations, will arrest the attention of one in need; and it will enable him to go about his daily activity with an uplifted, enlightened thought. Many are led to enter the Reading Room to obtain further information about Christian Science, to borrow, purchase, or read the authorized literature.

A woman stopped at a Reading Room window to read citations from the Lesson-Sermon, outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. She then stepped into the salesroom and told the librarian she often paused to see if there was something marked in the window display that would lift her thought. She said that several months before she had felt burdened and depressed over a family situation. She had read this verse from the open Bible in the window: "For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee. Fear not; I will help thee" (Isa. 41: 13). Instantly the whole burden lifted, and she had gone down the street with a light heart.

A man who had read from the books in the window of another Reading Room came in to ask some questions. He said that when a young boy he had attended the Christian Science Sunday School but had not continued his study. After answering his questions, the librarian lent him a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. At the testimony meeting in a branch church the following Wednesday evening this man expressed gratitude for a healing which he had experienced. He stated he had not borrowed the textbook with a conscious desire for physical healing, but that as a result of three days' study an inharmonious condition had completely disappeared.
