Over a period of months I suffered...

Over a period of months I suffered intermittently from a painful left shoulder and arm. The discomfort would come and go, and although I was reared in Christian Science and have known no other form of treatment and healing, I confess that I did very little about this condition. It began to get worse shortly before I was to occupy a responsible church office. I knew it was right that I be completely free of any encumbrance, and so I set to work in earnest on the condition.

I handled the belief of pain, working with this passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 113): "The divine metaphysics of Christian Science, like the method in mathematics, proves the rule by inversion. For example: There is no pain in Truth, and no truth in pain; no nerve in Mind, and no mind in nerve; no matter in Mind, and no mind in matter; no matter in Life, and no life in matter; no matter in good, and no good in matter."

I saw that pain is an illusion, nothing claiming attention as something. Pain has no foundation in good and no function in the divine economy; therefore it must be unreal. How could man, the child of God, be afflicted with nothing claiming to be something? He could not.
