Prior to my introduction to..

Prior to my introduction to Christian Science over thirty years ago, I had attempted many times to read and understand the Bible; but because of my altogether material approach, I had met with no success. I was unable to understand why God, after creating everything very good, would be so unwise as to introduce the tree of good and evil into the Garden of Eden and then permit the serpent to recommend the fruit to man whom he had made in His own image and likeness. Neither could I reconcile my idea of God, who must necessarily be good and loving, worthy of man's loyalty and adoration, with the concept of a God who would permit suffering and death.

Hoping for a logical explanation of the many inconsistencies which troubled me, I questioned members of various churches who appeared to find peace and satisfaction in their teachings. I always seemed to meet with some such statement as: "You have to believe. You have to have faith." I was given no explanation which satisfactorily removed my fears and doubts.

The feeling of frustration became pronounced, and such an aversion to religion, church, and God resulted that I felt I had become an atheist. I still hoped, however, that sometime an answer would be supplied which would destroy my unhappiness and doubts and bring the peace which I so earnestly sought.
