Christian Scientists and the Bible

From early childhood Mrs. Eddy read the Bible as a normal part of her daily activity, and her abiding interest in this great Book is evidenced throughout her writings. But it was not until she was faced with a grave emergency that she found a deeper, a more spiritual sense of the Scriptural teachings.

After her remarkable recovery, which came while she was reading Matthew's account of the healing of the palsied man, Mrs. Eddy devoted three full years to searching the Scriptures from the standpoint of the light which her experience cast upon them. She writes in "Retrospection and Introspection (p. 25): "The Bible was my textbook. It answered my questions as to how I was healed; but the Scriptures had to me a new meaning, a new tongue. Their spiritual signification appeared; and I apprehended for the first time, in their spiritual meaning, Jesus' teaching and demonstration, and the Principle and rule of spiritual Science and metaphysical healing,—in a word. Christian Science."

Following our Leader's example, we turn to the Bible each day, together with Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and find that new revelations of spiritual truth come to us in an orderly way. As a result the unfolding in human consciousness of the spiritual idea of being becomes clearer and is found amply able to meet and overcome the world's belief in dualism, which would obscure the underlying spiritual reality of God's allness.
