The Athlete and Christian Science

To human sense athletics involve physical activity and ability, and one's physical fitness seems to determine largely one's degree of performance in sports. In fact, physical fitness, or lack of it, is receiving much attention today on a worldwide basis.

Christian Science is beneficial to the one participating in athletics. He finds that as he demonstrates this Science he need have no fear of being physically unfit and that he can continually improve his ability. Spiritual education becomes of greater value in meeting these demands than does physical education. One's study reveals that in reality man is the perfect, active, spiritual idea of God. Therefore, one's fitness and ability are necessarily derived from God and are as perfect as the Mind expressing them. Health, ability, strength, balance, action, form, keenness, and power are attributes of God, the one infinite divine Mind, and are uninterruptedly expressed in His idea, man.

By applying to his human experience these absolute facts of man's source of power, the athlete is helped in his discernment of the Science of being. Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 350), "Divine Truth must be known by its effects on the body as well as on the mind, before the Science of being can be demonstrated." This effect on or in the flesh results from the appearing of the Christ, or Saviour, in the human consciousness. It is always the right idea becoming apparent to us that eliminates any false mortal belief. Thus all human activity may be regenerated and perfected by this power and activity of the Christ.
