SACRIFICE
Harsh
concept of a just but jealous God
Drove Abraham to climb the lonely mount.
Father of nations. Did this title call
For sacrifice of this, his only son?
But stay, the knife already in his hand
Is halted. Though the centuries must roll
Before the birth of Jesus, yet a glimpse
Of Christ, which comes to banish from the flesh
Incarnate error, opened there his eyes
To contemplation of a God of love.
A fatherhood so glorious, it consumed,
Like sacrificial flame, all lesser thoughts!
Father of nations now he well may be
Who saw at last the nature of his source.
