"Go in and possess the land"

At different times in their wanderings in the wilderness, the children of Israel were admonished to "go in and possess the land" (Dent. 1:8). The spiritual significance of this admonition is with us today, and Christian Science shows each one of us just how he can take possession of the land of promise.

This land of promise, of course, is not a physical land, but a state of consciousness. It is the understanding and demonstration of God's government, which, in turn, is manifested as health, harmony, and well-being. But just how do we possess this land, and what are the conditions under which we can go in and take possession?

In the first place, it takes spiritual sense to become aware of the promised land and to become aware of the possibility of our possessing it. It is through spiritual sense that we come to know God, that we come to feel the presence of divine Love, that we come to know the certainty of Truth and the beauty of Soul. It is through spiritual sense that we come to know man in God's likeness, perfect and eternal, the son and heir of infinite Spirit. We can come to know the presence of God's ideas, which reflect the government of divine Love and fill every human need.
