Hold Fast

One of the major deterrents to progress in any field of right endeavor is the subtle, false belief of discouragement. It has a strong persistent ally calling itself defeatism. These mortal mind beliefs attempt to insinuate their falsity into every worthwhile pursuit. Unless constant vigilance is foremost in thought, these beliefs would try to interfere with the Christian Scientist's progress in spiritual healing, both for himself and for others.

Mrs. Eddy brought again to the world the great work of spiritual healing, taught and performed by Christ Jesus, and then provided the means for doing this work and for holding fast to the gains made by such work. These means never dull through service but become more effective with constant use. One explanation is found in these words by our Leader on page 1 of Science and Health: "Prayer, watching, and working, combined with self-immolation, are God's gracious means for accomplishing whatever has been successfully done for the Christianization and health of mankind."

The new student of Christian Science is not alone in needing to meet the challenge of discouragement and defeatism. The mature worker, however, when thus confronted, recognizes more quickly the attempted efforts of these erroneous beliefs. Strengthened by previous successful encounters with them, he has learned to meet discouragement with hope, truth, and encouragement and to turn defeatism into Love-inspired victory.
