Christmas Preparations

Mrs. Eddy loved the annual return of Christmas celebrations, the joy of family reunions, the spontaneous delight of children at this season. Yet, as her understanding of Christian Science grew, she increasingly valued the spiritual treasures of Christmas which each individual discovers in the sanctuary of prayer. Without this spiritual experience the true meaning of Christmas can be lost in the heavy atmosphere of commercialism which surrounds the public for many weeks before Christmas Day. The buoyancy of the occasion will be missing unless the function of Spirit is present.

Sunday School teachers would do well to prepare themselves early to share with their pupils the thrill of that silent night in which a spiritual idea was apprehended. This is an individual experience, and youngsters can be encouraged to discover it anew each year. Mrs. Eddy's writings provide ample guidance to Christian Scientists on this subject.

If a preoccupation with toys, entertainment, and other forms of amusement seems to be monopolizing Sunday School pupils' thought at this season, what can teachers do?
