Supporting Our Lectures

A Christian Science lecture is a momentous event, and the supporting prayers of church members for its success will be effective in the measure of their understanding of the mission of the lecture. Mary Baker Eddy says in her letter to The Christian Science Board of Lectureship (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 248), "You are not setting up to be great; you are here for the purpose of grasping and defining the demonstrable, the eternal." She says a little farther on, "You go forth to face the foe with loving look and with the religion and philosophy of labor, duty, liberty, and love, to challenge universal indifference, chance, and creeds.

One can scarcely read these words, which largely define the mission of a lecture, without being stirred to utilize his own spiritual abilities to give support to lectures given in his community. If the church member challenges first the indifference, the sense of chance, and the undestroyed effect of false creeds in his own heart, he is in a position to help overcome these errors in the carnal mind, which claims to implant them in the community. The most important task is to feel the inspiration and deep interest that should come to one at the prospect of having the Word of God publicly explained.

Christian Science lectures are a means which our Leader designed for communicating her great discovery to the world. The absolute truth underlying this church activity is that in the universe of Spirit, God is perpetually imparting spiritual ideas and inspiration to His children. His Truth reaches His offspring clearly and continuously; they hear His Word, delight in it, magnify it, and image it forth spontaneously.
