RADIO PROGRAM No. 144 - Taking a New Look at Ourselves

INTERVIEWER: It is generally true that most people at the beginning of a new year look back over the months which have passed and wonder if, given the opportunity and the same circumstances, they couldn't have done better. In the book entitled "The Challenge of the Passing Years." R. M. Maclver, the author, makes this statement: "One reason why man's efforts to shape the future are so often futile or worse is that he is slow to learn the lessons of his own past." What do you think we can learn from the past that will help us shape the future?

SPEAKER: Doesn't this depend on how or why we look back at the past? We can certainly learn from experience. But if all we do is dwell in a gloomy way on mistakes, this isn't going to help; in fact, it hinders. That would be like staring into a dark, cold cave marked "My Mistakes" instead of facing the warm, strong sunlight of goodness that's all around.
