The Stranger Is Welcome
Spiritual preparedness is the keynote to a gracious, healing atmosphere in a Christian Science Reading Room. This is accomplished not only through prayerful individual work but also through inspiring staff meetings, where those who serve in a Reading Room come together to discuss the activity.
A librarian writes:
"Well-attended staff meetings have helped to spiritualize our concept of the Reading Room and to give us a better understanding of our Leader's purpose in establishing these rooms. This clearer vision has resulted in greater activity. Several healings have taken place, and strangers have come in to inquire about Christian Science and to purchase or borrow the textbook.
'"One young woman read all afternoon in the study room. She told the attendant that as a child she had been taught to fear God; she never dreamed that He was a God of love until she started reading Science and Health. She lives in the neighborhood and plans to attend church.
"A woman came to purchase a Monitor. She was hot, tired, and ill. She gratefully accepted an invitation to read in the study room. When she left she expressed gratitude and asked if she might return. She was also invited to attend our church services."
A man asked a librarian to tell him something about Christian Science and its connection with world conditions. He was told that Christian Science is based on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus; also that Christian Science explains the unreality of evil. He was invited to read the first chapter of Genesis and to note that God made man in His image and likeness, and that everything He made was very good. This appealed to him, and upon leaving the study room he asked about the Christian Science church. Science and Health was opened to Mrs. Eddy's definition of Church. "This is what I have been searching for," he said. "It answers all my questions." He purchased a copy of Science and Health and accepted an invitation to visit a branch church.
